We were married for well over 10 years. The thought of having children crossed our minds but we never delved deep into the subject of it. All we knew was that we were “okay” with the thought of having children together and we were also “okay” continuing to live our lives as best friends, traveling the world and supporting each other through life’s many obstacles.
We decided to return to Europe Fall of 2018, our goal was to hit up Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany once again. We loved it the first time we went so we figured a return would be nothing short of amazing.
And so we did that, near the end of September 2018 we traveled to London, Munich, Colmar, Strasbourg and Paris.
Fast forward to our return home, and a few weeks later surprise, surprise we found out we were expecting! It’s funny though, during that trip we talked about the possibility of us not having kids becoming more of a reality as we both liked living our lives, just the two of us. We promised each other that this would not become an issue in our relationship in future years.
I was still taken aback with the notion that I was pregnant and so we decided to keep it a secret between the two of us. We wanted to share with family, but the timing never seemed right. It wasn’t until Christmas Eve 2018 that we were all leaving my parent’s home and I just blurted it out. Like there, you all know now! It was a great moment and from that point forward the excitement just continued to grow.
In my line of work, I lead a team and work amongst a small management team. I decided to wait one more month to share the news with them. Besides I wasn’t showing too much, so there really wasn’t any need to. When I finally shared the news, it felt good. I could finally start wearing clothes comfortably that was snug to my growing bump.
As for first trimester symptoms, I really didn’t have too many. The main ones were a sense of tiredness once nightfall came, along with 3am wake up calls of what I refer to as small waves of nausea. I never really got “sick”. Even though I would wake up early I would simply sit up in bed, read or go through the good old “gram” feed for about 30 minutes to let the wave ride out. The only times I did get “sick” were times where I didn’t listen to my body and overate. I would regurgitate that real quick. I learned my lesson though, it only happened twice!
By the time my second trimester came, I had a little more energy and the nausea waves and early wake up calls significantly lessened. At about 20 weeks, I started showing. That’s where the fun began. I was finally able to start wearing maternity clothes that I purchased at Asos, Shoppinkblush and Ross. I’ve only purchased about 7 maternity clothing pieces. The others have all been non-maternity thanks to retailers like Target and Forever21. Keep in mind, I can still wear my non-maternity dresses and some tops, but the bottoms are where you get the return on investment. They are life-changers! My work wardrobe can vary from business professional to casual. At some point I’ll create a post on what I purchased, what worked and what didn’t. My goal has been to create a capsule pregnancy wardrobe that can function for either work or weekend wear.
We are excited to be bringing our little GIRL into this world, God willing by June 30th.
I hope this post has helped you or a friend that may be expecting. You don’t necessarily need to change much about your life other than removing things like alcohol and caffeine from your diet if that’s your thing. I continuously remind myself to only take one day at a time!
