One Night at Hotel del Coronado in December: Family Travel
One Night at Hotel del Coronado with Kids: Is It Worth It?
If you’re planning a family getaway to Coronado Island in San Diego, you may be wondering: Is one night at Hotel del Coronado enough? And more importantly — is it worth it with kids?
This isn’t our first rodeo at The Del. We’ve booked our family vacation stays for spring, summer and winter.
We recently spent one night at Hotel del Coronado in the winter with our six-year-old daughter, and I’m sharing everything we did, where we ate, and tips to help you plan a stress-free family trip.
If you’re a busy working mom like me, sometimes a quick 24-hour reset is exactly what your family needs.
24 Hours in Coronado Island with Kids
Coronado Island is one of those places that instantly feels like a vacation — even if you’re only staying one night. The wide beaches, charming small-town vibe, and walkability make it perfect for families.
Here’s exactly how we spent our 24 hours.
Checking Into Hotel del Coronado (The Victorian)
We stayed in The Victorian building at Hotel del Coronado. Our room had:
- Two queen beds
- Courtyard view
- Easy access to the main grounds
Because we’re Hilton Diamond members, we received a nice little upgrade at check in. The upgrade gave us a nice courtyard view!

The Victorian architecture is iconic and makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a coastal fairytale. It’s historic, beautiful, and especially magical during the holidays.
Mom Tip:
If you’re staying just one night, request a room near the main courtyard so you can easily walk to dining, ice skating, and the beach without needing to move your car.
Ice Skating at Hotel del Coronado (Winter Highlight)
One of the biggest reasons we booked our stay in the winter was for the famous Skating by the Sea experience. Although we have stayed previous winters, our daughter was too young to participate in the ice-skating activities.
We made a 4:30 PM reservation, which ended up being perfect because:
- We skated during sunset
- The golden sky over the ocean made it feel magical
- It wasn’t too late for our six-year-old
Our skating reservation was 90 minutes, which was more than enough time for kids. By the end, our daughter was tired but so happy.

If you’re visiting during the holidays, book your tickets early. It fills up quickly.
What I Loved:
- The ocean backdrop
- Holiday music playing
- Cozy winter vibes without freezing weather
It truly felt like a memory-making moment. I can’t wait for us to go back again!
Ordering Pizza from ENO After Ice Skating
If you are planning to visit Coronado Island, one of the best parts of the Hotel Del grounds is that they have so many options for you to enjoy at the resort.
After ice skating, we were ready for something easy and family-friendly. Instead of sitting down for a long dinner or walking downtown away from the hotel — we ordered pizza from ENO Market & Pizzeria inside Hotel Del.
Here’s what worked perfectly:
- We placed our order before skating
- Picked it up right after our 90-minute reservation along with sparking water and lemonade for drinks. They also provided paper plates and napkins to go.
- We walked just a few steps away from the Pizzeria and found bench style seating on concrete steps across the beach. We opened our box of pizza and voila, enjoyed dinner picnic style.
This was such a mom win.
Instead of waiting at a restaurant with a tired child, we grabbed our food and enjoyed it picnic-style near the sand. Casual, relaxed, and zero stress.

If you’re traveling with kids, quick-service options like this are ideal after an activity. Are you paying for a resort priced pizza? Yes. But the price is worth it when you know you’re going to have a stress-free and enjoyable dinner.
Ice Cream at Hotel Del
Even in winter, ice cream is always a yes. Hotel Del has an amazing ice cream shop located right across ENO Pizzeria and Market.
One of the best parts about Hotel del Coronado is that you can grab ice cream and walk straight to the beach.
Things we loved:
- Our daughter enjoyed selecting her ice-cream cup and toppings. Sprinkles of course! And let me say, they were generous with them!
- Sat and people-watched with a beautiful backdrop of the ocean waves.
- Let our daughter run along the shore after she was done with her sweet treat!
It’s simple, but sometimes the simplest moments are the best ones.

Where to Eat Near Hotel del Coronado (Family-Friendly)
If you’re staying overnight, you’ll probably want to explore beyond the resort too.
Clayton’s Coffee Shop
We walked to Clayton’s Coffee Shop, which is family-friendly and known for:
- Huge portions
- Indoor and outdoor seating
- Classic diner-style comfort food

It’s perfect for families, but here’s what to keep in mind:
- It can get sunny outdoors, so you may want to opt to wait for indoor seating.
- Portions are large (great for sharing!)
- It’s popular, so expect a short wait during peak times

The vibe is relaxed, welcoming, and very Coronado. It’s great for people watching if you are sitting outside. Visiting Coronado in December, the weather can vary. This weekend the weather hit close to 80 degrees.
Miguel’s
This is one of our favorite restaurants to visit as a family. It just checks all the boxes. We’ve visited this restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner on separate visits. We are always seated quickly which is a huge plus for families with kids!
- Authentic Mexican food
- Walkable from Hotel Del
- Delicious kids meals with really good fresh fruit servings as a side
- Meals are priced well, budget-friendly

Mom Tip:
If you want a cocktail but don’t want to pay a hotel resort price, get your cocktail at Miguels. They have delicious margaritas and flavorful cocktails. They also have a good assortment of local and craft beers. They aren’t stingy with their alcohol and liquor pours.
Hot Chocolate, Hot Toddy & Holiday Cocktails
Back at the hotel in the evening, we grabbed:
- Hot chocolate for our daughter
- A hot toddy and cocktail for us parents

The wonderful thing about the Del is that they have the cutest pop-up stations where they sell hot chocolate, cocktails and even coffee!
If you’re traveling as parents, I highly recommend building in small moments just for you — even if your child is with you.
We walked the hotel grounds at night to see the holiday décor and tree lighting. The theme during our visit was Wizard of Oz, which felt extra magical (especially if you’re a Wicked fan like me!).

The entire property glows at night. The tree’s light up and dance to the rhythm of the music playing. Twinkle lights, Christmas trees, ocean breeze — it’s a vibe.
Morning at the Beach
Before checking out, we had breakfast in our room. We made a quick trip to ENO Market downstairs and picked up some freshly squeezed orange juice, yogurt parfait, coffee and delicious pastries. We enjoyed a nice breakfast to in our room to get us started for the day.

Before we left, we made sure to spend time at the beach.

Coronado Beach is:
- Wide
- Clean
- Perfect for shells
- Great for letting kids run
Even in winter, it wasn’t too cold. Southern California winters are mild, making it an ideal off-season travel destination.
We collected seashells (placing them back before we walked off the beach), dug in the sand, and soaked in the slower pace before heading home.
Is One Night at Hotel del Coronado Enough?
Here’s my honest answer: yes — if you plan intentionally.
For working parents especially, one night can feel like a reset without the stress of extended travel planning.
What made our one-night stay successful:
- Arriving early before check-in and exploring the grounds.
- Booking ice skating in advance
- Pre-ordering dinner
- Choosing walkable dining spots
- Keeping expectations realistic
There are several other hotel activities to choose from at the hotel, like afternoon tea, movies by the sea, and bicycle rentals. The only activity we paid for was ice-skating, other than that we enjoyed just being at the beach and taking in the views.
You won’t do everything in 24 hours — and that’s okay. It gives you a reason to want to return.
Focus on 3–4 core experiences and enjoy them fully.
We love building small memory-making trips like this — just like when we visit Disneyland during the holidays. You can read more about that here –> Visiting Disneyland During the Holidays with Kids: Full Guide – The Sun Queen Diaries
Best Time to Visit Hotel del Coronado with Kids
Winter was honestly perfect for us.
Why I recommend winter:
- Fewer crowds than summer
- Holiday activities like ice skating
- Mild San Diego weather
- Easier reservations, if you book early. Holidays at the Del are popular!
Summer is beautiful, but if you’re traveling with young kids and prefer slightly calmer energy, winter is a great option.
Practical Tips for Moms Traveling with Kids
Here are a few things I’d do again:
✔ Pack extra layers for beach evenings
✔ Bring sandals + closed-toe shoes
✔ Book activity reservations early
✔ Build in downtime
✔ Choose one splurge activity (for us: skating)
As a working mom, I’ve learned that trips don’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful.
Sometimes it’s one night.
One sunset.
One shared pizza.
One happy six-year-old memory.
And that’s enough.
Final Thoughts: Would We Do It Again?
Absolutely. And we have! You can read our previous posts to see what keeps on bringing us back to this resort.
