When I first found out I was pregnant (October 2018) I thought it would be wise to set a budget for my maternity wardrobe. I knew I would have a few months before I would actually have to make a purchase since I planned to maintain my pre-pregnancy diet. Today I’ll share with you the tips and hacks I found extremely useful (and ahem wallet friendly).
I made a list of items I envisioned having in my wardrobe.
I did this in the notes section of my iPhone . I knew I needed interchangeable outfits for both work and weekend wear. This is what my list looked like:
- Black skinny pants/trousers
- Black and white striped top
- Olive green pants
- Black loose lace top
- White/creme loose top
- Black snug top
- Black dress
- Work dress (pink or navy)
- Skinny denim pants
- Casual Skirt
- Dress that can be work with sandals or heels
- Grey wrap style dress
I only ended up purchasing 11 items at under $115.
- Black skinny pants from Asos.
- White sleeveless top from Asos.
- Blue skinny denim jeans (Ross find)
- Olive green velvet joggers (Ross find)
- Olive green skinny ankle pants (Ross find)
- Black fitted sleeveless tank (Ross find)
- 3/4 Black fitted lace sleeved top (Ross find)
- White pin striped dress from Pink Blush
- Red polka-dot dress from Pink Blush
- 3/4 sleeve floral maxi dress from Pink Blush
- Long sleeve olive green dress (non-maternity) Who What Wear (Target non-maternity)
Pregnancy Undergarments – Do you even need them?
I will probably talk more in depth about this in another post but to answer your question, yes it makes a difference! I purchased 3 maternity bras all from Target and they have really made a difference in my level of everyday comfort. Each one purchased has the nursing clip options so look for those as it serves two purposes. What I loved the most is that it has several back clips which allows the bra to grow with you as your bosom does. I purchased one bra at the beginning of my second trimester and then purchased the other two at the end of my second trimester.
I didn’t purchase any underpants because I felt comfortable wearing the ones I had. I will make mention though that I did use a skirt slip occasionally after midway into my second trimester as I wanted to reduce the appearance of any underwear lines. I know some women still wear thong underwear during pregnancy, but that’s just not my jam. I preferred coverage and comfort and it worked well for me.
Lessons Learned
I would definitely recommend making a list of wardrobe items you think you’ll need once you find out you’re pregnant. Have a vision in mind to accommodate your daily routine. Once I hit the end of my second trimester I regularly used my maternity clothes and only subbed in non-maternity tops that were comfortable. Think wrap-style and flowy tops. Midi skirts with stretch also worked great!
Knowing what I wanted to purchase allowed me to shop with a vision in mind instead of making aimless purchases. It also helped me save money. Ross was one of the stores where I found significant savings! It’s easy to walk into a store and just pick things, pay for them and walk out the door. My suggestion, try everything on! I’m so glad I did. There were pieces that I thought were so cute and once I tried them on in the fitting room they would just drown me. I liked Pink Blush as on online boutique because based on their size chart, their sizes were true to fit. To help me, I actually used a clothing measure tape to size myself and compare my measurements to their size chart. I didn’t have to return a thing and all items fit me comfortably until the end of my pregnancy.
It’s worth mentioning that most of the clothes that I have purchased can be worn for the first post birth weeks. The dresses are great for nursing if that’s something I’m able to do once baby arrives. I hope this post helps any expecting mama’s out there!
